X is for Xenophobia

Xenophobia - definition: strong and unreasonable dislike or fear of people from other countries.

Faux City was created as an oasis for it's people. Going outside it's walls is widely considered both dangerous and unnecessary. When Deidra meets Kale, she doesn't care where he's from because he saves her life (from dehydration). Likewise Kale who's linked with the Old World and knows about diversity, is happy to find someone he can teach about the past.

But if Lord Brinn catches up with them will he be able to view Kale with an open mind. Or will xenophobia take hold because of lack of contact with anything (and anyone) outside the walls of Faux City and it's people?

  1. I'm thinking Brinn will have a closed mind.

  2. Unfortunately, xenophobia is alive and well everywhere still. Great word choice!

  3. I have long hated xenophobia. I don't know if it's particularly appropriate to most of the racism I see in my own country and overseas, but it's sure encouraged a lot by our governments nowadays, and by the media (in Australia we have a lot of "boat people" hysteria at the moment).

  5. Can't believe I wasn't following you already. I just became follower #200!

I don't consider myself xenophobic, but if a certain group of people wants to come and change my life and the culture of the country where I live then I don't approve of that. But overall I love peoples and the diversity of the world we live in.

    1. So glad you're #200. This challenge has been amazing and yes I'd be uncomfortable with invaders as well. But like you said Xenophobia isn't good.

  6. Xenophobia is universal. It's not exclusively human. I think most people are only tribal in the most basic sense & enjoy other cultures. But perceived fears make others extreme.

  7. I think it's sad that such a condition exists. Kudos to you, Sheena for highlighting it. And thanks for visiting my blog.

  8. What a terrible fear. Ignorance at it best in my opinion.

  9. Oh, I like the idea of isolating a population. It raises the tension while at the same time, hits at the adventure beyond the barrier.

  10. Nothing wrong with being cautious or a healthy distrust...as long as it doesn't go to extremes. A whole group/race/etc., can't be judged by the actions of a few....

  11. Yes, we have to say no to xenophobia, we are all persons!

  12. Xenophobia is actually hardwired into our brains. Early man was afraid of anyone outside of their own "tribe." I like how your story plays on that instinct.

  13. Conquering fear requires bravery and determination. Makes success that much sweeter.

  16. Faux City is a very interesting name for the place. It gives a definite feeling about it before you even read another word about it. Great job naming :)

  17. Faux City sounds very insular and curious to see how it's all handled.

I'm with Elizabeth-Never understood xenophobia. I like a world filled with color and variety. Like my neighborhood that way too. :-)

  18. I did't even know such a phobia existed. The human mind is a complex thing.

  19. Interesting. That's not a phobia I'd heard of before. I love seeing how you're tying all these things into your story. :)
