GUTGAA: Meet and Greet
Deanna has organized GUTGAA and it is a great event for writers to meet each other and pitch their work.
Hi, I'm Sheena-kay Graham and I am a writer. While I have only been published in a literary supplement for poetry so far. I feel that I've done much to get myself ready to be a published novelist. The supplement was in The Sunday Observer and named Bookends Magazine. I was a paid contributor between 2007-2011. I stopped after months going without acceptance after changes in their line-up phased out poetry. But I enjoyed that experience and will only look forward to accomplishments like finally creating a blog that keeps me in contact with aspiring novelist and writers like myself. I look back on my first blogpost October 25, 2011 and find this quote very self-fulfilling.
My real name is Sheena-kay Graham and my nickname (and now my blog's name) was self given and inspired in part by the movie Sheena: Queen of the Jungle. Also my love for Africa, my skin and believing in fact that we can take hold of our destinies. My nickname symbolizes this for me and creating this blog furthers plans for professional success.
I believe by writing and now having several w.i.p.s in the works and a novella Sacrifice Her to be self published late October that I have followed my path as a writer and will only improve. My writing path is to both self-publish and submit my manuscripts to traditional publishers whether by myself or through an agent. GUTGAA is great in that it gives us all an opportunity to meet others at different points in their journey. Before this I've met several like myself who are either still writing their book or submitting it to agents and publishers if they're not self-published. And yes there are those who have had their work accepted to be published or have gotten an agent. I am happy for all of them.
Now straight to the questions:
Where do you write?
Mainly in my bedroom. I also do a bit of writing at the library. Sometimes I make notations while on the road.
Quick. Go to your writing space, sit down and look to your left. What is the first thing you see?
I see a chair blocking the dresser. Sorry no great secrets to enthrall you with. That's what my books are for. *Winks.*
Favorite time to write?
Whenever I'm least bothered. I used to fear whether it was day or night but noticed when I'm in my element I can write at anytime. Including day, night and even early hours.
Drink of choice while writing?
It depends. I love fruit juices and HATE coffee. No disrespect to coffee drinkers.
When writing , do you listen to music or do you need complete silence?
Silence is best for me. I have given in to temptation to write with music on before and always get the job done a lot slower. Even when typing up something from what I've already written by hand.
What was your inspiration for your latest manuscript and where did you find it?
I'll speak about the inspiration for my latest W.I.P. Nevermore was inspired by a call by Entangled Publishing for Halloween novellas with a zombie twist. While I have decided not to submit to them. I have picked a few other publishers I will send it out to when it's fully polished. I'm aiming for a small press for this one.
What's your most valuable writing tip?
Never give up. In the past I often wrote to a point then stopped. I have a pile of unfinished novels. While they used to be a great regret, now they're a huge inspiration. How inventive I've been to have work still waiting to be completed as I come up with and write new work. Some writers can only create a few works in a lifetime. I have a nice load and am very proud of it. As I go on my journey, I will have huge well of creativity to accompany me. So I say to all of you keep going and turn what you might consider a negative into a positive. If you can't don't let it keep you from your writing or life destiny. The only fate we can't get away from is death. Life is a choice, live it.
So there you have it. I have introduced myself and hope you will go out and do the same or visit others and let them know you've read their post and create new relationships of your own.

Playlist Week: Nevermore
Nevermore is set in Detroit two years after zombies showed up. Peter Pan leads his group of Lost Boys as they fight to survive in a world where one mistake can kill you. Unless you're immune.
Summary: In a world full of zombies, survivors have to do whatever it takes to survive. Peter Pan and his crew of Lost Boys scavenge the ruins of Detroit for food, ammunition and anything else they can find. Their leader being immune gives them a great advantage. Then a new girl comes along, Tinker Bell. Her affliction divides them and when an accident gets Sebastian Hook on their trail things turn even deadlier than they already are. How do you defeat an enemy who can control the very thing that scares you most?
Please note: The widget doesn't seem to be working on my blog post. So if the playlist doesn't show up below either click the link or use the playlist at the top of the sidebar. Thank you.

1. Who Dat - This song was just the perfect themse song to Nevermore to me. It has the flavour, drama and feel of a top contender. I feel the novella and main protagonist and antagonist (Peter Pan and Sebastian Hook) evoke the need and demand to be heard and understand. The fact that Peter and Sebastian are both teenagers in this book only emphasizes that demand. Also a book about fighting zombies needs a kick ass theme song. Who Dat kicks ass.
2. Crossroads - There is a turning point tragedy in Nevermore that I think this song is perfect for. I can't go into detain but I will say it turns the Peter Pan and Sebastian fued into something more deadly.
3. Amen - Is about life in The Garage Pit where Peter Pan, Lost Boys and a lot of teens like them live. The Garage Pit is their home and they're grateful to have a place like that to be themselves and not be influenced by zombies or adults. The few adults who live there leave the teens to their own devices.
4. Enter Sandman - This song is for a grand showdown in Nevermore. Can't say anything else. It will be epic though. EPIC.
5. Where have you been - (note this song is by Imany not Rihanna) Is about the relationship that develops between Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. As a human who can fight the zombie virus by only turning when necessary or angered, she can avoid harming people for sheer hunger. But like all zombies any bodily fluid from her can turn a human. Then comes Perter Pan who is truly immune and she finally has someone she can be in contact with without fear of turning them into a monster. So this song follows how grateful Tinkerbell is for this chance and Peter getting closer to her.
6. Zombie - This song is my way of questioning who is truly the zombie. When people have to choose who lives and who dies, who gets supplies, who gets shelter and emotions have to be put aside. Is it just the zombies who eat flesh that are zombies or is the environment making humans into zombies as well? The non-flesh eating type of course.
7. Sing - My Chemical Romance: This is song about each place where humans are gathered fighting to maintain their freedom. Especially from Sebastian Hook who wants to be the only place of refuge for those hiding from zombies.
8. Roger That - Young Money : (a) This song is about the sex culture in Nevermore. Without adult reinforcement a lot of these teens have sex whenever they want. Especially after nightfall when in The Garage Pit makeshift clubs open. (b) This is also Loud's song. As the only girl in Lost Boys she proves her worth by both her bad girl status as a former gang leader and her sexual prowess. She is dominating and is a complete contrast to the demure Tinkerbell.
9. Monster - Kanye West : The transformation Sebastian goes through after a shocking event.
10. Pain - Three Days Grace : Pretty much for painful events in Nevermore and how pain sometimes has to be the driving force to keep moving.
11. Heads Will Roll - Yeah Yeah Yeahs : This will be the end song when changes come to the forefront. Title of the song says it all. And no it's not Sebastian Hook, it's a new problem.
And now for a peek into Nevermore.... Peek : Tinker Bell is wearing a handkerchief top, blue booty shorts and is barefoot. She complains...
"Eddie, the girls gave me a hoochie outfit." Eddie was silently staring too.
"Oh no, no, no, you look...great." Tinker Bell sighed.
"Why did I bother with a guy."
"Loud has extra jeans," Peter Pan said before he could stop himself.
"Thank goodness, this thing feels like tight underwear."
"You're so gay," Eddie muttered and Peter Pan elbowed him, hard.
So there's your peek readers. If you want more Nevermore check out Nevermore Hookers, Nevermore Hangers, and The Magic 8 Ball: Nevermore Excerpt. Tomorrow will be Circa's turn. But I leave you with this quick Nevermore excerpt concerning Peter Pan. Thank you for stopping by.
Once his life was different. Born in Detroit, he was working class poor. His mother Ester Morris took care of them both. Murmured little protest when he dropped out of school at age twelve. Bought him a box of six frosted cupcakes for his fourteenth birthday with his name on them. He, his best friend Spike and a few other teens hung out and ate in the dingy corridor of the apartment complex.
It was the last normal day of his life.

Sacrifice Her Delay Explained
I left a short notice on Tuesday about Sacrifice Her being delayed. Now I'd like to explain further. This was a tough decision that took a lot of thinking, mulling and serious consideration. Earlier this year I shelved Rachel Becoming Red. I did that because I knew the novel was not only not ready but completely wrong for the direction of the series. So I shelved it and set a new release date of December 2014. Thankfully this isn't the issue with Sacrifice Her.
The delay is a result of several circumstances. First I have limited computer and internet access making typing extremely time cinsuming. I write on paper first but it still takes lot of time typing up this novella when I get the chance. Also there's editing that needs to be done, contacting individuals who I agreed to send drafts to critique, arranging the book cover, promoting the novel and a host of other things.
Secondly I had some financial issues this year as a result of a sudden cancellation. I had agreed to fill a ghostwriting order for a certain individual. This made me put all writing on hold earlier this year and after agreeing everything was fine, she balked at the last second and cancelled. No notice, no explanation, nothing. So I was stuck with a complete manuscript and no one to give it to. I found her twitter, lulu and facebook accounts through several searches then preceeded to try and make contact to get an explanation. It wasn't until I left a serious facebook message warning against her using any sample of the work that I'd sent her that she responded. She claimed she left me a message about cancelling and a bag of excuses. My response was just to let her know about our agreement that if she cancelled the only thing she got back was her character list and story idea. Everything else became my property. Since everything she gave me to start with was a scant few lines and two images. I came back with a lot. But not the money I wasted so much time ghostwriting for when I could've been writing my own work. So needless to say buying stock images and other things for my book cover and trailer stalled for a while. Also there were other things I wanted to do for my novel that I still can't.
Thirdly there's things about the novella I'd still like to look over more. The last thing I want to do is release shoddy work just because I wanted to make a release date. It's not fair to readers, buyers or myself. Plus a later release date gives me time to promote Sacrifice Her properly. And that's a good thing.
So Sacrifice Her will be released this fall. October 28 is the earliest possible release date but it could be as late as December. Thank you all those who visit this blog and a special thank you to all my supporters.

Character Interview: Joseph from The Choice (Book 2 in The Sacrifice Series)
Please Note. If you're looking for my Insecure Writers Support Group post click here.
To read Waiting on Wednesday post click here.
Joseph Rowe walks up and sits down beside me on the park bench. His dress is much simplier than Jessica's, wearing a bottoned white shirt and blue jeans with black shoes. His dark brown hair neatly combed and his brown eyes welcoming. I decided to wear a T-shirt and jean shorts with sneakers. A last minute change since I concluded dressing up like I did with Jessica would look silly in a park.
I would've interviewed him in the same office as I did Jessica Hatfield but he wanted to be outside. He's the other protagonist in The Choice, book 2 in The Sacrifice Series. This novella has an October/November release. Tomorrow I'll be doing an interview with the protagonist and antagonist from Sacrifice Her (book 1 in Sacrifice Series) which has an August release date.
Me: Hello Joseph.
Joseph: Hi. I guess you have some questions for me. (He brushes back his hair nervously)
Me: Yes but I'd like you to introduce yourself first. What would you like me to know about you.
Joseph: Heh, I'm a teenager living in the most prosperous part of Chance City. Music is my favourite thing to do and I'm to be sacrificed for the good of Chance. Me and a girl.
Me: Okay. I'm just a twenty-seven year old woman performing an interview. Much less dramatic.
Joseph: That's lucky.
Me: (Pauses) Um, first question. Why does Chance City have these sacrifices?
Joseph: That's quite a history lesson. Chance City is a beacon of hope on a earth ravaged by man's greed. Few places are highly habitable and a lot of the world is divided into good and badland. The badlands are the wastelands and the death spots. Wasteland is barren space with areas of pollution. It's hard to survive. Death Spots are just that. If you hit that area you're dead. Poisonous chemicals and other elements have made those areas uninhabitable by any source of life. Chance City in it's former days was less glamourous and things became so bad among the few haves and the many have nots that talks of burning everything down became dangerous talk. One day a teenager named Gamon stepped out the safety of the compound and went to the starving people below. He asked what could be done for them to live in peace. The poor said that first they wanted to have equal shares and second they wanted to punish those who left them to suffer. He returned home with an idea. Use the poor to slowly build up their area and meet their demands for compensation. Over the next three years a system was developed and the poor were asked what they wanted from those who had better fortunes. The order was shocking. Sacrifice. At first those of better standing refused but the outcry from the poor forced them to go through with it. In the beginning it was older men and women and their deaths were grizzly at the hands of a hateful mob. But as things became more structured the sacrifice model changed. By the time I was born it was teens who were sacrificed to keep the peace. Two, a boy and girl after living fifteen years in luxury.
Me: It must be hard going to your death so young.
Joseph: It's that or the wasteland. I heard you interviewed the girl I'm supposed to go with?
Me: Yes she's very nice and pretty.
Joseph: That's good I guess.
Me: Do you have any dreams for yourself?
Joseph: Honestly I'd like to learn how to paint. Right now I do mostly abstract but I'd like to learn more. Also travel around playing my music. I know in the old world they were musiciand who travelled everywhere. It would be a dream come tru...who am i kidding?
Me: It's not bad to dream. Next question, What is your daily routine?
Joseph: I get up, get the assigned stuff out the way then I go exploring for as long as I can. It's interesting what you find when you're looking keenly.
Me: Jess... I mean the girl who'll be with you when the sacrifice is carried out said fifteen years seems longer thanks to the sacrifice. What do you think?
Joseph: Fifteen years is not nearly enough. She's nuts.
Me: (notices a guard frowning a few trees away) Could you defy being sacrificed?
Guard: Hey!
Me: The Chancellor allowed me that question. Long as I don't encourage Joseph into mischief.
Joseph: I'm not... (his eyes fell on the guards spread out in civilianclothes) next question. Please.
Me: Sure. Are you hungry (Joseph sakes his head)? So, are you allowed to have relationships?
Joseph: No, it was decided being with someone when your life's to be extinguised would be too painful for both sides.
Me: Do you love Chance City?
Joseph: (sighs) I don't hate the citizens. The common man.
Guards walk towards us.
Me: (urgently) How were you chosen?
Joseph: My mother was chosen to give birth to the next sacrifice. Some volunteer but she didn't.
Me: How do you feel about the ones who refuse to be sacrificed.
Joseph: Honestly, they're braver than me. The guards are pissed. This interview is done for.
Me: I guessed that. (Guards hover over us in a circle)
Head Guard: Wrap it up Sheena, he's going home.
Joseph: But I want to go see....
Head Guard: Not after some of that talk I overheard. You're on lockdown as soon as you leave this bench.
Joseph looks at me with fearful eyes. I want to help him but know I can't. He's only visiting, anything I do against these guards will be taken out on Joseph the second he's out of sight.
Me: Please sir, give him one chance. I know he's different but he's a nice boy.
Head Guard: Did I ask you anything?
Me: No.
Guard: Joseph come on. Don't make this harder than it has to be.
Joseph resists as they force him to his feet. I have to get up to keep myself from getting a hard kick.
Head Guard: Have some pride and behave. Boy if you don't shape up...you'll be out in the wastelands before I blink. The barren land alone could have you starving to death and oh, the animals mutated by our mistakes.... even worse.
Me: Stop scaring him. He's already going to die. Stop it!!
Everyone goes silent. I nudge the Head Guard aside and take a teary eyed Joseph's hand.
Joseph: I don't want to die. I can't be like the other one you interviewed.
Me: That's okay. You're having the natural reaction most would towards this. Don't be ashamed.
Another Guard: He was raised to be stronger than this. The day is nearly upon us. He better be ready.
Joseph: (sniffles) I'm fine. I'm better guards, we can go. Thank you for talking to me Sheena.
Me: You're Welcome. (Sigh as he's led away)

Character Interview: Jessica from The Choice (Book 2 in The Sacrifice Series)
I sit behind a desk paper in hand. Today I'll be interviewing Jessica Hatfield. Jessica is one of two major protagonist (and M.C.) in The Choice book 2 in The Sacrifice Series. While the novella has an October/November release date. I just had the urge to do an interview with her now. June 6, I'll be doing an interview with Joseph Rowe, the other protagonist in this book. Saturday May 26 will be dedicated to a look inside of Sacrifice Her (book 1) and interviews with protagonist Deidra and antagonist Lord Brinn will be done June 8, 2012. This novella has an August release date .
I clear my head and straighten my red top. I know Jessica is into fashion and want to look my best. I'm wearing a red top, black skirt and black shoes. My raven coloured hair is in a high ponytail.
(Knock on Door)
Me: Come in.
The door opens and in enters a blonde teenager. She smiles showing perfect white teeth. She shyly closes the door and walks over. Her outfit is glamorous. A silky sapphire dress down to her ankles with sparkles of diamonds everywhere that compliments her white skin. I notice a peek of high heeled blue shoes and her blonde hair is done up in a sophisticated bun. Her make up and blue nail polish is flawless. Her blue eyes meet my brown as she sits and I smile.
Jessica: Good Morning.
Me: Hi, did you get escorted over alright?
Jessica: Escorted sounds so rigid. The guards and I are great friends. They're here for my protection, really.
Me: Well they're willing to wait outside the door so they must trust us.
Jessica: Chance City provides for us all. It's an honour to give up my life to keep such privileged ongoing for others.
Me: Yes. My first question. How did you come to be chosen?
Jessica: I was picked from birth. Women volunteer and the Chancellor picked a lucky few.
Me: Do you ever worry about dying at fifteen? So young?
Jessica: Knowing you have fifteen years makes it seem a lot longer. I've lived a life of luxury in exchange for my life at fifteen. I was born into this but I chose to do it.
Me: Do you know about those who refuse?
Jessica: (face flares) Traitors (comes out in a hiss, her fists clench and face contorts).
Me: (leans back) I'll skip the next question? Do you need a moment?
Jessica: Sorry, it just makes me so mad. Do you know some wait for the very day then kill themselves? So sick. Just say no and go off to the wastelands already.
Me: Do you think they all deserve that? Sorry, that's not on my interview sheet.
Jessica: That's ok. No but that rule came into effect after repeated rebellion from families hoping to get their relation back. When the hope was completely removed, the rebellion almost completely died down. The decision was done out of necessity, for balance.
Me: I was sad that as young as age six can be banished to the wastelands if they decide not to be a sacrifice. I think they should at least have more time. But that's my opinion.
Jessica: And I can respect that. You live in a very different world. I like your ponytail.
Me: (blushes) Thanks. What do you think you'd do if you were allowed to grow up and have a job?
Jessica: I used to think about that when I was little. (Giggles) I wanted to be a consultant on what wives of top officials wear. If not I'd still like to work in a job that involves clothes and fashion.
Me: In my world you'd probably be a fashion designer. Celebrities would be the most fun in my opinion.
Jessica: What's a celebrity?
Me: Umm...probably someone like your chancellor but without the politics.
Jessica: Sounds exciting. May I ask you a question? Two?
Me: (Recalling the contract I signed to get this interview) Sure?
Jessica: First, not to offend...but what colour are you?
Me: I'm black, also dark-skinned or dark brown. Depending on the preference of the individual labeling me.
Jessica: Oh, everyone is one colour in Chance City. I think it's caucasian around here.
Me: Yes it is. Your next question?
Jessica: (Face brightens) Do you eat candy?
Me: Yes. Why...no, no, I was strictly told...
Jessica: Please? I'm not allowed because I get cavities easily and we have limited medical facilities. (She does a quivering lip on me) I only have a short time left.
Me: Ugh fine. (I fish chocolate out my pocket) I only eat plain chocolate so if...
(Jessica grabs it and eats it delicately. She pops in strawberry Listerine strips afterwards)
Me: Wow you really planned that out.
Jessica: Oh no, a girl at the food supply store was handing out some of these. Said it freshens your breath.
Me: You mean the supermarket?
Jessica: Oh yeah, confusing name. The chancellor allowed a short tour. Not that I can buy anything.
Me: (Digs into my pocket) Knock yourself out. I was told one of the guards understands the currency here.
Jessica: (Takes the money) Yay!!
Me: Only three questions left. What is a typical day like for you?
Jessica: I think I can reveal a typical Monday. I'm awaken by my lady servant Anna and led to my bath, then I meditate and at around 8:00 a.m. I have breakfast of blue berries, honey and toast with lemonade tea. I go to classes and at lunch I have two slices of meat pie and chilled water, then I get to do my own sessions in which I look over the latest fashions and before dinner I recite our pledges as sacrifices and then eat whatever is prepared. Then I meet privately with a special guest and before bed get a dessert of milk, strawberries and whipped cream, really rare.
Me: Oh. That's great. Have you been the Revelation Ball yet?
Jessica: No that's about a month away. After we're shown to the public we have a week before we sacrifice ourselves.
Me: Final Question. Do you want to do this? And what do you have to say to those who feel you're manipulated.
Jessica: First off yes, I've made my choice to do this. And if this were manipulation why have rejections been made public record? Wouldn't it be better to hide it? And if there was no choice, no one would be going off to the wastelands.
Me: Thank you Jessica for this honest and lovely interview. I will miss you but respect your right to decide.
Jessica: I will miss you too Sheena-kay. Goodbye. (She curtsies then leaves).
I get up to go when a guard peeks in. I smile at the stern faced man and nod. He closes the door. My hands shakes slightly as I turn off the tape recorder in my pocket.

Picking the Perfect Cover
I was up all late hours looking at images for my upcoming/future ebook covers. It's not easy to pick that one image for a book (for my novel Rachel Becoming Red I found free images and had some one crop them together for $5US). You always want the 'perfect one' and it gets all hair pulling/ Lord of the Rings esque (*wheezes* : Have to find my precious-image) crazy. But you do find something eventually. I hope. However I did find an image for a novella I had the sudden urge to undertake this year. It was a combination of novellette talk, history channel, greek mythology and me, crazy crazy me. Yeah.
I have plans for a novella in June called Sacrifice. This is a project more of fun for me but I still plan to approach it as seriously as my other works. In this novella my M.C. is among a group of girls to be sacrificed to 'Gore' God of Maiming and Mayhem but she escapes. The god threatens the ruler with destruction if he doesn't get his sacrifice and so starts the fight between a girl who wants to live and a man who wants to save his country and people.
Below is the image I'm purchasing off the Dreamstime website.
NOTE: Have since decided not to use image and have removed it in respect of copyright laws.

Isn't she lovely? I also plan to have a firey background. It will be an ebook and around 20,000 words or a little over. Plus I'm considering making this into a saga of sacrifice books. Each with as different scenario of someone being set for sacrifice and their reaction to it. Hmm, something to consider. Especially since I already have the Red Series on my self-publishing plate. But I think it's a good idea.
Not to forget others. Emily has a blog hop called Oh, Those High School Dances! Blog Hop. I have already added my blog to the link list. So should you. Another one at the The Mod Podge Bookshelf has a giveaway of a collection of 2012 YA Arcs. Counting down the days to the finish I am *squeals.*
P.S.: I also found the perfect image for Circa if I were planning on self publishing it. I plan to buy that image another time anyway. Hey if agents fall through in 2013, I'm publishing it myself. Both my guts and the fans and readers who love it everythime I drop a tidbit about this W.I.P. tell me it's a great novel with an exciting premise.
