Monday MishMash and Do you have Goals?

I have been having more periods of exhaustion lately. This has affected both my writing time online and off. But I will adjust, not give up and if I don't post that is because it one of those days. Sometimes I just can't write up that needed post or I'm too tired to go around posting comments and in both cases I would rather not post. Thank you for all your support over the years and hopefully by July I'll be able to do tests that will diagnose this issue officially. Meanwhile though I am here, give God praise and stay happy and never sad (for too long).

Plan to have cover reveal for all books at once late July. Book one's cover is already out though and it is beautiful. Still planning for a Fall 2016 release. Enjoy the rest of your day and June will be dedicated to writing two WIPS (one MG and the other YA).

After reading Fairest I knew Marissa could do a story no wrong. With the completion of one series she has already moved unto another fairytale retelling. This time with Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. I just can't wait to get my hands on this book!

Getting Personal: Skyping with Grace Randolph and Monday MishMash

Sunday May 15, 2016 will go down as a special day for me. Why? Well I got to skype with Youtube movie news sensation Grace Randolph, creator of the channels Beyond the Trailer and Movie Math. She has been mentioned on my blog in the past via questions she has answered for me on Morning Movie News segment and my love for movies. I was over the moon when I won among a select group of viewers a chance to chat with her via skype for five minutes. Score!

Of course for such an occasion I decided to skype on the veranda ready for my 1:30 pm meet up, 2:30 pm Eastern on her side. We started with some chit chat. Me excited to be talking to her for the first time and she also excited and thanking me for being a regular viewer. Then it was question time. She asked me about the movie I had most recently seen and it was the Jungle Book. Both of us enjoyed that movie and talked a bit about the technology and characters of the movie.

Then...the glitches started. Before there was a small one but soon she actually got knocked off and could only type. Thankfully I could still also hear her and soon she was back with her smiling blonde self. I started talking about a fan casting I did for a future Fantastic 4 movie which intrigued her since she is among those who would love to see a Fantastic 4 movie do well at the box office. Unfortunately the glitches came back and I decided we better finish up. Overall I had a wonderful time and glitches be damned. Grace is wonderful to chat with and keeps all her viewers up to date on what is happening in the movie verse. She interacts so well with her fans and I even sent her my fan casting in a twitter DM.

Monday MishMash





1. Update my Fantastic 4 (named Fantastic) fan casting and story. With the recent open casting of Black Panther and Fish Mooney returning to television's Gotham, I need to make some changes. Already started some additions and plan to continue. It is still very amateur but I'm having fun. All I will say right now is that I cast Edward Norton as Mr. Fantastic/Reed. If Chris Evans can go from Fox to Marvel then Edward can go from Marvel to Fox. Just saying.

2. Continue managing my freelance schedule.

3. Getting ready for Junowrimo and Bunowrimo. Yes I plan to do two next month. Yes I'm nuts.

4. Watching Angry Birds and X-Men: Apocalypse this week. Why did Jamaica bring both of these out last week? It only makes me more amped and I follow a budget.

5. Working on an exciting new idea inspired by NBC's Emerald City trailer. Yes, another one.

Book Review: The 13th Warning

Hope you guys are having a great Friday. Sorry about no Wednesday post, that one will go up on Monday instead. I'll end my posts this week with a book review of an author you'd have to be living under a rock or the farthest darkest corner of the earth not to know of him.

Book Review

R.L. Stine is a story telling genius. There are stories that while still fun I'll look back on and say that was not so scary or not as good as I remember. But not this one. Despite being one of the recent Goosebumps I have read (yes I have restarted getting more of these) it was both a scary and  mesmerizing read. At just 59 pages the book is a quick read. Yet I found myself worrying for the main character Joseph a.k.a. Lucky from early on. R.L. Stine really knew how to take a mundane and silly visit from the Superstition Society and make it seem genuinely frightening. If that pair had shown up at my door as an adult I would be really uncomfortable. As a kid? No way. That door would have stayed closed until my mother answered it. Mundane accidents took on a whole new meaning with a curse you went back and forth wondering if it might be true or just plain superstition. The ending leaves you with both answers and questions about the whole thing. My only criticism is that this book was not longer. Do an adult version R.L. Stine. Hell, a 200 page YA.

“Are you a ghost?” Eun Na asked as she looked and saw Tae Kyung standing there. He was leaning up against a tree. His eyes went wide briefly, as a bit of color left his face. Was he surprised to see her? No, it wasn’t that Eun Na reminded herself. It was something else. He had called to her first.

“Something like that,” Tae Kyung replied.

“Well that would explain it” Eun Na walked to the side of the road where Tae Kyung was standing and sat down next to him. Eun Na removed her worn shoe. One of the pieces of twine was broken. She would need to mend it.

“What would explain what?” Tae Kyung asked as he joined her.

“Ghosts would explain my wound,” Eun Na said as she pulled off her sock and revealed the angry looking red streak on her leg. Its dark color became lighter. “It’s even healing right now, before my eyes.” If she hadn’t seen it fade, she’d not have believed it.

“Mmm,” Tae Kyung murmured as he reached over and put a hand on her head. She felt a tingling sensation on her scalp from his touch. “You must have hit your head when you fell into that hole.”

“Is that your polite way of saying I’m going crazy?” Eun Na said, turning her head to look at him as she spoke. The smile he gave her made her heart rate speed up. She moved to cover her feet when Tae Kyung spoke.

“There’s nothing wrong with your leg.”

“Huh?” Eun Na looked at her leg. Tae Kyung was right; the angry red wound was gone. “Maybe I am going crazy.” Eun Na gave Tae Kyung a pondering look, and then leaned over and pinched his arm hard.

“Hey! What did you do that for?” Tae Kyung shouted, leaning away from her.

“Sorry. I was just checking to see if you were real.”

“Shouldn’t you have pinched yourself to see if you were awake?” Tae Kyung grumbled, rubbing his arm and watching Eun Na warily.

“I am awake. That’s the problem,” Eun Na replied. “My life is turning into a huge mess it seems.”

“I think you need new shoes,” Tae Kyung informed her.

“What?” His sudden change of topic confused her.

“I bet that’s why you were limping. So, put your sock and shoe back on, and let’s go see what we can find.”

“That’s all right. I’ll make do with these. My family can’t afford shoes just now,” Eun Na explained as she finished putting her shoe back on and stood up. “Well, I must be going.”

“To buy shoes,” Tae Kyung said as he moved swiftly. He took one of Eun Na’s arms at the wrist, and in a fluid motion, lifted her onto his back, her legs to either side.

She had no choice but to wrap her arms around his neck and shoulder. “Hey! Put me down.”

“Only after we buy you a pair of shoes that are not worn out to strings.”

“They are made of twine,” Eun Na laughed.

“As I said, they are nothing more than strings,” Tae Kyung said, winning the argument.

Eun Na decided to rest her head on his strong shoulders and just enjoy the moment.

4. Writing more for myself. Very intrigued by a new novel idea I got over the weekend. 

5. Trying for another free movie pass this month (saw the movie Batman v Superman when I won one in April. Last time I won before that was in 2015 and the only one I won that year). Not sure what I'll see yet if I win it.

6. Watching Game of Thrones. Did three episodes yesterday. By that I mean the first three episodes of Season One. So I'm totally on a roll. 

7. Wednesday's post will be about me experiencing Skyping for the first time with a certain Youtuber. I have mentioned her before and had a great time chatting with her on Sunday.

Captain America: Civil War - The Book Tag

Hawkeye: A character that is extremely good at something very specific.



Paxton is a hunter through and through.

Agent 13: A character you’re super nervous about.

Peter is the douche you'll fall in love with. For his jerkish ways and snappy come backs. Both in the books and movies.

Carlisle and Edward Cullen. These two vampires know each other very well while playing the role of father and son. Of course after over a century together they'll be thick as thieves. No matter their differences and who comes in and out of their lives.

Team Iron Man

Iron Man: A character that doesn’t seem to learn from their mistakes.



Pick a number. Everybody is wrong and messed up or deluded or naive in this book. Everybody!!

War Machine: A character that’s always showing off his “big guns.”



If you anything about these turtles you know they're ready to rumble anytime. Especially Raphael. Maybe Alex Cavanagh in his ninja persona and Mini Alex can go on a mission with them one day. Can you imagine?

Black Widow: Badass female character that also has a soft side.



Ember Hill barely edged out Katnis Everdeen for this spot. But come on. This teenage girl turns into a dragon! A dragon!

Vision: A character you are unsure about.

This version of Cinderella took me for quite a ride. I really am not sure what to expect of her despite the ending. Can't wait for the sequel and here is my recent review of the book.

Black Panther: A character out for revenge.

Ronan the Accuser. Oh yeah, he's evil. That or he has the perfect band name.

Spider Man: A character you were afraid just wasn’t going to fit in.

Jinx had a lot of issues to sort out being a demon that was not like the rest. A lot.

Agatha and Sophie. Talk about a strange friendship gone wrong. Fairy tales man.

Book Review: Sidekicked

Jolly Wednesday to you all and today I'll be sharing an oldie but goodie. Already rated this book on Goodreads a while back but never posted a review there or here. Time to rectify that right now and share with you a fun yet somewhat serious look into the life of a young upcoming superhero sidekick. Is it all fun and games or is there real risk involved. Read my review to get a glimpse and decide if you want to find out the full story yourself.

Book Review

One of the things I really loved about this story was how 'down to Earth' it was within a fantasy tale about superheroes and their sidekicks. It is written in a fun comedic style that does not hide both the good and negatives sides of the existence of superheroes and villains. Drew's power is both a blessing and curse. Sure he can smell what would be the components of a bomb but he does not have superpowers to stop it mid explosion or beat up the potential villains who would be in his way. This is just an out of the box example I'm setting up but you get the gist. The novel follows Andrew Bean a.k.a. Drew who is a part of a secret organization which trains psychics. When a villain returns and wreaks havoc, the sidekicks end up having more responsibilities thrust upon them than expected. Through in real life drama, school crushes and parents who need to be kept in the dark. Childhood drama takes on a new and potentially deadly meaning as these villains are not afraid to hurt anyone adult or no to get to their goal.

The book is one that I think readers who are both love and hate superheroes can read. Why? Because it keeps the joy and woes of such a scenario and world while also bringing in the reality of the situation a lot of superhero stories gloss over for the sake of fantasy or 'that is fiction'. Drew has a crush, has to face potential death and betrayal, attacks close to home and all sorts of scenarios with long standing implications and consequences. It is not all solved within the book and in the end we get to see there are ripple effects to every decision made. Even Drew's wayward drunk mentor has a story and shows being a superhero is not all capes and victories. If you want a superhero story that is not just a superhero story then this book is for you. If you just want superheroes this book works that in as well. Either way I would recommend everyone give this a peek and see if you might enjoy it just as much as I did. MG/YA has books that dig deeper than the surface and this is one both adults and kids a like can read and see how dangerous life can be and also how great and adventurous.

Getting Personal with Reflection Post and Monday MishMash

Today I'll be integrating my Getting Personal segment with the A to Z Reflection post.

2016's A to Z Blogging Challenge ended April 30 and in it's wake are all kinds of emotions both from those who took part in the challenge and those who were just spectators. For myself I have a mixed sense of elation, tiredness, and relief. Elation from being a victor and completing the challenge. Last year I did not take part but was a minion to The Joy Brigade. This year however I was determined to take part and also ended up being a minion to a variety of blogs. About two or three ended up being removed from the challenge and another one or two stopped writing challenge posts. But there were those who went to the end even if they didn't get every letter. I send congrats to all of them as taking on this challenge is not easy. Then there is tiredness. April took a wild turn when I was hit by a bad flu. If I had not made notes of the movies I wanted to do in advance I am not sure if I would have made it after sickness hit. A lot of the post I ended up having to do day to day because the flu as well as my exhaustion issues and everything else that comes with having a life took hold. Yet I still persevered and that's what matters. Lastly there's the sense of relief. As much as I loved going from day to day proving I could do the challenge as well as enjoying my movie theme. It was a relief to post the letter Z. It's kind of like writing a book. Of course you want to write it. But you also want to finish that book eventually and move unto something else. No one wants too much of a good thing.

At the end of the day I'm very happy with A to Z this year. My only gripe is that there are some on the list who join with zero interest in visiting others at all. But that has nothing to do with those who organize the event and is up to the individual. It was fun sharing my love of movies with both regular visitors and new alike. Kudos to all who worked so hard to organize the event and to all who took part thanks for making this year's challenge so many flavors of wonderful.

Movie Love: The Jungle Book (Top Five)

Welcome to another edition of Movie Love. Today we will be doing things a bit differently. Instead of the usual spiel I will be doing a top five edition. I went to see The Jungle Book on Tuesday and had a wonderful time in the world Disney created for this big screen live adaptation. As you know I am both a book and movie lover and in Jamaica I'm happy to say that it's a treat to go out and see the latest batch of film releases in a theater with fellow movie goers.

1. With an in dept story line and computer animation that boggles the mind. Why not go see it. Trust me this one of the few movies that uses every bit of it's 3D price tag wisely. Plus for all those who had doubts that Disney's latest slate of live action of animated tales could anything but bubbly princess or other female led movies, be aware that it can. This movie gives me confidence that a live action Lion King can be done well and trust me, that says a lot.

2. Shere Kahn. Yes you need to go see a computer animated tiger. But he is so much more than that. This menacing villain doesn't even need to speak to be menacing. Just the very presence of this danger to Mowgli's life sends ripples of fear throughout the jungle and might just give you a chill up your spine in that dark movie theater.

3. The computer animation. Trust me whether or not you are a huge fan of computer graphics the story intertwined with this on screen artistry needs to be seen. The very fact that talking animals in a live action can be so amazing and realistic in a dark family movie in 2016 speaks volumes. Want to see something half as chilling as Shere Kahn? Just follow the monkeys.

4. Mowgli and the actor who plays him. This little boy has a bright acting future ahead of him if he decides to move forward. Who can believe that he even did some of his own stunts! 

5. Everything! This movie has received critical acclaim for a reason. The action, visuals, dialogue. Nothing is wasted and it is so amazing that I would recommend this to a blind person. Yeah I said I would recommend this highly to the blind. Best audio they'll hear on the big screen. Hopefully what I just said was not prejudiced. I do know that there are theaters that cater to the blind and even without some do go to movie theaters anyhow.

Book Review: Sinful Cinderella

A happy Wednesday to all of you. This is my first book review for the new month as I get into full swing the origin of this blog mixed in with the new. Movie Love is Friday featuring The Jungle Book. But after May, Movie Love on this blog will only be on the first Friday of each month an d feature a summary of movies I have seen. By then I should have my new movie blog up and that is where my regular posts on movies will be. So until then. Now relax and check out my latest book review. I have two review styles. One with my thoughts on the book and a rating, the other where I separate the good and the bad then give a verdict. Today I'll be using the latter. This is not the main style and will only be used for books that I don't think a rating along will do justice.

Book Review

The Good: Despite a weak start the novella kept me reading. I did stop around 38% into it on my kindle because while I was intrigued, it was not a must read. But when I came back and went past the 55% or so mark the story picked up so much I had to finish. I had thought I would only browse it a bit more but I ended up hungrily finishing up the rest of it. This novella has a story worth reading despite taking a while to draw readers in and it has made me excited for the upcoming sequel. Twists and turns in the latter half of the book are a great read.

The Bad: The writing is just not that great. Not for a story that clearly wants the scope this is going for. It can barely hold up all it's parts as a novella and the average writing does not help. Also while I do like character driven stories. The story behind this character for the first half (50%) of the book is rather poor and shoddy. Not enough to make me lose interest but when the last 40% was able to jump off the page rather well it became glaringly obvious something had gone right yet wrong at the same time with Sinful Cinderella.

Verdict: This book has four star potential but is held back by a overall average book. The story is great in my opinion but the way the book is written hampers all that potential. Think Daredevil movie versus Daredevil on Netflix. I like both but clearly the one on Netflix is of better quality. So while I did enjoy the story it took a while because of not so great writing and a weak story start. I got it for free and while I definitely want to get the sequel when it comes out at the end of May. I would say buyer be ware on this. Download the sample and if you like that then you'll love the whole thing. If not then maybe hedge your bets and decide how long you want to wait until you start enjoying a novel.

1. Be happy to not have to post everyday. I mean I survived the A to Z Blogging Challenge 2016!! Had so much fun sharing a month of movies with you guys! I am a Survivor! Hear me ROAR!!!

                                                                

2. Start using my blog to post Monday, Wednesday and Friday. My prime post days with excepting being for certain cover reveals, guest posts and 

3. Work on starting a new blog called Movie Love where I'll post about going to movies and all movie related things. Will still do a Movie Love segment here once a month every first Friday once that blog is up.

4. Start up my 300 words a day goal for my Camp Nanowrimo WIP (Rapunzel Retelling). I have never won any wrimo before but still take part in them. Go figure. Oh and I'm doing Junowrimo too so heads up everyone!

5. Freelancing on a better schedule so that I hand in less late projects. Not good for business even with a flu. 

6. Read more and post at least two book reviews a week. One this week though, sorry but A to Z is stressful despite the fun. I did it though! Yes!!

7. Plan to see The Jungle Book and Captain America: Civil War this week.

Do You Have Goals?

Well I still plan to publish The Missing Girls Series this year. But it will definitely be in the fall. Have to ensure to give ample time for promotion and cover reveals. Which should start around Mid-June.
