Monday MishMash November 2016

Monday Mishmash is a weekly meme created by Kelly Hashway for sharing what's going on in your life and noggin. You just grab a button and post your business...I mean thoughts online. No biggie. Have fun!

1. Over the weekend there was a lot of talk on twitter about a certain 2017 release YA with overtones that were considered very racist or prejudiced. Word of warning. If you make your fictional characters in any way based off or similar to marginalized people in the real world...prepare to get blasted if you do it in a way that offends them. Especially when your book allegedly has potential 'white savior' syndrome. That really needs to stop. NOW.

2. Writing will be a big thing this week. With Nano going on and freelance orders...time to work.

3. I'm going to start watching shows on Netflix again. Just need to schedule things so I'm not still writing at night. I missed you.

4. Read at least two books this week. I keep starting and stopping with books of late. That needs to end.

5. Continue dropping in on Facebook book events. They're fun.

So that's it for me. Pretty regular week ahead. Except for that it's Nano and my birthday month! God Bless.

  2. What needs to stop, the racist attacks or white saviour syndrome? I think it is understandable that if a writer is white that their hero is white too, people usually write from their experience. Mari Lu, for example, has all positive characters Asians or Black, while the extreme villains are blond and white, I didn't find it overly problematic, it is her world.

I do however prefer when YA books don't go into politics. The book I'm currently translating, an extremely popular from this year, is set in WW2 and pretty much puts Russians as the same as Nazis... I'm disgusted... Russians died in millions to free Europe from the Nazis and now the countries that were Nazi collaborators are trying to make it all relative.... as a teacher I can't stand such manipulations with history in books for teens....

  3. I missed the Twitter conversation too. Wonder what book it is. Good luck with all you want to do this month.

  4. I might manage a movie a week on Netflix, but that's about it. Now if I could finish a book a week that would be excellent.

  5. I was offline all weekend. A treat for myself, so I missed the bruhaha. I should be absent more often. :-)

  6. I spend very little time on Twitter so I missed all the drama and that is fine by me. ;) Good luck with all of your writing, I hope it goes well for you!

  9. I missed that Twitter talk. Then again, I'm not on Twitter very long when I pop in.

  11. That "white savior" thing is in a LOT of movies. Look at Guardians of the Galaxy. One white guy, everyone else is diverse. The white guy's the hero and they're the followers. So everyone's going to jump on this author, but no one says "boo" about GotG or the countless other hugely successful movies that have "white savior" syndrome? Sounds unfair to the author... Good luck with NaNo, freelance work, and reading - and get some good Netflix watching in there!

  13. I meant to get here on Monday! Whew! It's been quite the week, and with that late night last night... Yeah, we stayed up for the whole thing.

I hope your NaNo efforts are paying out in ridiculous word counts and amazing story ventures.
